How to get rid of a couch in the High Desert
Cheapest first: give it away, donate it, use your city's free program, drop it off, and pay a hauler only if the rest fail. This page covers the High Desert (Victorville, Hesperia, Apple Valley and nearby).
Will someone take a couch for free?
Good, if it is clean and dry. Couches are the most posted free item on local marketplaces and flippers and families take them within a day or two. Stained, pet-damaged or wet couches almost never go free; plan on bulky pickup or a hauler.
Step by step
- Decide if someone would want it. Clean, dry and not torn: post it free. Otherwise skip to the city program or a hauler.
- Post it with a photo. Post on Fjerne, a local Facebook group or Buy Nothing. Say the size, whether it splits apart, and if there are stairs.
- Try donation if it is in good shape. Habitat for Humanity ReStore and the Salvation Army pick up usable furniture in many areas. Check the nearest store's rules first.
- Use the city's free bulky-item pickup. Victorville and Apple Valley residents with curbside barrels get free scheduled pickups through Burrtec. Hesperia residents call Advance Disposal.
- Drop it off yourself. Victorville residents can take furniture to the Recycling Drop-off Center on Anacapa Road with proof of residency. The county landfill on Stoddard Wells Road takes it for a fee.
- Pay a hauler. Expect roughly $60 to $150 for a single couch from an independent hauler. Ask about insurance before booking.
Worth knowing
- Measure it and say whether it comes apart. A sectional that splits into three pieces fits in a pickup; one that does not needs a trailer.
- Sleeper sofas are heavy and are not accepted by the free mattress drop-off program, so the whole unit goes as furniture.
- If it is going to the curb for a scheduled pickup, do not set it out before the appointment is booked. Victorville treats early set-outs as dumping.

Donation pickup
Habitat for Humanity ReStore and the Salvation Army pick up usable furniture and working appliances in many areas; use each one's online locator to find the nearest store and its rules. Items must be clean, working and complete. Starting with tax year 2026, non-itemizers can claim a deduction for charitable donations.
Or post it on Fjerne
One post with a photo and your ZIP code. Nearby collectors offer to take it for free or quote a removal price, and you choose. During the pilot a person forwards your post to collectors in range, usually the same day. Your street address stays private until you pick someone.
